Digital Humanism Summer School 2025

We are pleased to announce that the 4th ACM Europe Digital Humanism Summer School will take place from September 8th to 12th, at TU Wien, Austria. Deadline for applications is July 07th, 2025.

A limited number of scholarships, including registration fee waivers and full scholarships, are awarded on the basis of merit and financial need. Furthermore, ACM will provide free 1-year memberships for all students attending the school.

Digital Humanism is an interdisciplinary field that examines the complex interplay between technology and humankind with the aim of creating a better society and improving our lives. It recognizes that an interdisciplinary approach is necessary, breaking down disciplinary silos and integrating humanities, social, technical, and engineering sciences.

Building on the successes of our previous editions, 1st Digital Humanism Summer School in 20222nd ACM Digital Humanism Summer School in 2023, and 3rd ACM Digital Humanism Summer School in 2024 the Summer School will be held at TU Wien, which is deeply involved in the Digital Humanism Initiative and also hosts the UNESCO Chair on Digital Humanism.

The aim of the summer school is to provide a platform to explore and discuss key issues related to Digital Humanism, such as participation and democracy, digital politics and sovereignty, the role of platforms in the economy, privacy, AI and ethics, and fair systems. Globally recognized and leading academics from computer science, social sciences, and humanities will present and discuss these topics.

Internationally renowned and leading academics from computer science, social sciences, law and humanities present and discuss important recent topics and themes, including:

  1. Foundational Issues: Foundational and Philosophical Issues of Digital Technologies;
  2. Policy-Making: The Politics of Digital Technologies (incl. regulation, law, citizenship, democracy);
  3. Education: Shaping critical Digital Humanism education in and on the Digital Transformation;
  4. Language: The Digital Divide, connectedness, human communication, the role of Generative AI;
  5. Global Dimensions: Digital Humanism in Global Perspective (Europe, US, Africa …).


These topics will be introduced by internationally renowned experts, including Hans Akkermans, (w4ra.org, Netherlands), Anna Bon (VU Amsterdam, Netherlands), Tanja Bosch (Centre for Film and Media Studies, University of Cape Town, South Africa), Adèle Botha (CSIR, South Africa), Virginia Dignum(Umeå University, Sweden), Merve Hickok (AIethicist.org), Max Kasy (Oxford University), Peter Knees (TU Wien), Thomas Lohninger (epicenter.works, Austria), Julia Neidhardt (TU Wien), George Metakides (Digital Enlightenment Forum), Magdalena Ortiz (TU Wien, Austria), Erich Prem (eutema & TU Wien, Austria), Francesco Ricci (Free University of Bozen–Bolzano, Italy), Tim Smithers, Hannes Werthner (TU Wien, Austria), and Sally Wyatt (Maastricht University, Netherlands). 

The summer school is organized by the Digital Humanism InitiativeTU Wien Informatics and CAIML – Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (TU Wien).
