ICTs and sustainability

On 3 December 2019, 10:00 to 12:00, GSIS The Institute welcomed Gerhard Banse, Philosopher of Technology, Past President of the Leibniz Society of Scholars, Berlin, for a talk in German on ICT and Sustainable Development – (not) a “Harmony a priori”?!

Sustainable digitisation is an issue more and more actors are becoming aware of. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have their own ecological footprint in several dimensions, besides impacts that are not socially compatible. Thus, meaningful technology is technology that needs deliberate shaping for sustainability. Banse provided an analysis with facts and figures that provoked a fruitful and extended discussion.

Nine people accepted the invitation. The event took place at the Library of the Human Computer Interaction Group of the Institute of Visual Computing and Human-Centered Technology at the TU Wien and was co-organised with the Kompetenzzentrum Wissensmanagement, Johannes-Kepler-Universität Linz.
